Low Water Pressure in Your House? 7 Causes and How to Fix Them

🔧 Plumbing Repairs

Low water pressure in house plumbing has seven common causes. It may be a closed main shutoff valve or water meter valve. It may be a bad pressure regulator or a hidden leak. Clogged aerators, hard water buildup, old galvanized steel pipes, or a city water supply problem can also cause it. Normal home water pressure is 40 to 80 psi. You can test it with a low cost pressure gauge on a hose bib.

⚡ QUICK SUMMARY

Most low water pressure comes from a closed valve, a failing pressure regulator, a leak, or clogged pipes. Test with a gauge first. Healthy pressure is 40 to 80 psi. A new pressure regulator costs $200 to $700, about $400 on average (HomeAdvisor 2025). JC Sewer & Drain Plumbing finds and fixes pressure problems across Stockton and San Joaquin County. Call (209) 403-9023.

You step into the shower after a long day near the Miracle Mile. The water comes out in a weak trickle. You turn the handle all the way. Still weak. The kitchen faucet is slow too. Low water pressure is not just annoying. It is often a sign that something in your plumbing needs help.

What Is Considered Low Water Pressure?

Water pressure is measured in pounds per square inch, or psi. Most homes do best between 40 and 80 psi. Anything under 40 psi is considered low. The EPA WaterSense program recommends 45 to 60 psi for good flow without waste. Most plumbing codes require a regulator when pressure goes above 80 psi. That is because higher pressure can burst pipes and hurt fixtures.

40 to 80 psi

The normal water pressure range for most homes. EPA WaterSense suggests 45 to 60 psi.

Is Your Water Pressure Low? How to Test It at Home

1

Buy a pressure gauge

A simple gauge that screws onto a hose bib is a low cost tool at any hardware store. You can purchase one for less than the cost of a service call.

2

Turn off all water

Shut every faucet and shower, the washing machine, the dishwasher, and the sprinklers. Wait until nothing is running.

3

Screw the gauge on

Attach it to the outdoor hose bib closest to the water meter. Open the spigot fully open.

4

Read the psi

Under 40 psi is low. Over 80 psi is too high. Write it down and test at a different time of day.

Low pressure at one faucet only points to that fixture. Low pressure in the whole house points to the water supply, the main valves, the pressure regulator, or the water line.

What Causes Low Water Pressure in House Plumbing?

1. A partly closed main house shutoff valve

After a repair, the main house shutoff valve is sometimes left half open. Make sure it is fully open. Turn it all the way counterclockwise.

2. A partly closed water meter valve

The water meter valve sits at the meter by the street. It belongs to the water company. If work was done nearby, call your water supplier to check it.

3. A failing pressure regulator

This valve lowers city pressure to a safe level. Some call it a pressure reducing valve. Most last many years, but regulators wear out. A bad one can drop pressure in the whole house, or let it spike.

4. A leaky pipe or hidden leak

A leak steals water flow before it reaches your taps. Check your water meter with all water off. If it moves, you have a leak. EPA says household leaks waste nearly 1 trillion gallons a year in the U.S.

5. Clogged aerators and showerheads

Dirt and mineral buildup clog the aerator screen on a faucet or showerhead. This causes a weak stream at one fixture. Unscrew it and rinse it. Routine cleaning every few months keeps water coming out strong.

6. Hard water buildup inside pipes

Stockton water is hard. Cal Water's 2024 Stockton water quality report lists average hardness of about 150 ppm. Over years, minerals build up inside pipes and valves and narrow the path for water.

7. Old galvanized steel pipes

Some older homes still have galvanized pipes. They rust inside and slowly close up. In an older home, this is a common cause.

Sometimes the cause is not in your home at all. Ask your neighbors if their water pressure is low too. If it is, the city water supply may have a problem, or the water company may be working on a water line.

Low Pressure vs Low Flow: What Is the Difference?

Low pressure means the force of the water is weak everywhere. Low flow means less water volume comes out of one tap, often from a clog. It is a common mix up. A gauge tells you which one you have. Low flow at one faucet is often a simple fix. Low pressure in the whole house usually needs a plumber.

How to Fix Low Water Pressure Yourself

✓

Open the main valve

Make sure the main house shutoff valve is fully open.

✓

Clean aerators

Soak them in vinegar to melt the mineral buildup. It takes a few minutes.

✓

Check for leaks

Do the water meter test. Look for wet spots and running toilets.

✓

Ask the neighbors

If the whole street is low, contact your water supplier. They can tell you if there is work on the line.

💡 Pro Tip

Do not try to adjust the regulator screw without a gauge on the line. Small turns make big changes. Too much pressure can damage your water heater and fixtures.

When Should You Call a Plumber About Your Water Supply and Pressure Problems?

Call a plumber when the whole house has low water pressure and the valves are open, when pressure drops suddenly, or when you find a leak. Also call if you have galvanized steel pipes or pressure over 80 psi. We test the pressure, check the regulator, run leak detection, and inspect the water line. If you have a leak under the floor, see our guide to slab leak repair.

⚠️ Do Not Wait

Ignoring a pressure problem can cost you. A hidden leak raises your water bill every day and can cause water damage and mold. Pressure that is too high wears out pipes, valves, and appliances faster and can shorten their life. Local plumbing regulations call for a regulator when pressure runs over 80 psi, to reduce that risk. A small fix now saves a big repair later.

How Low Water Pressure Affects Daily Life

Homeowners notice low pressure first in the shower. It is hard to rinse shampoo out of your hair. Then the washing machine takes longer to fill. The dishwasher may not clean dishes well. Washing the car with a garden hose takes forever. If you are dealing with any of these, do not just live with it. Low pressure is common, but it is not fine. It can point to a leak or a failing valve that will get worse over time.

Pressure can also fall at certain times of day. In the early morning, when many households on your street shower at once, pressure may dip a little. That is normal. A big drop at all hours is not. Keep notes on when you notice it. That helps us find the point where the problem starts.

How Much Does It Cost to Fix Low Water Pressure?

The cost depends on the cause. Opening a valve or cleaning an aerator is free. A new water pressure regulator costs $200 to $700. The average is $400, says HomeAdvisor 2025. Leak repair and pipe replacement cost more and depend on where the pipe is. We always give a written quote before any work starts.

Cause.Typical fix.Cost.
Closed valve.Open it fully.Free.
Clogged aerator.Clean or replace.A few dollars.

Low Water Pressure Questions

Is 40 psi water pressure too low?

40 psi is at the low end of normal. It works, but showers may feel weak. Under 40 psi is considered low.

Why did my water pressure suddenly drop?

A sudden drop often means a leak, a valve that closed, a failing regulator, or work on the city water line. Check with neighbors, then call us.

How do I tell if my water pressure regulator is bad?

Signs include pressure that is too low or too high, pressure that changes a lot, banging pipes, or a leaking valve. A gauge test tells you for sure.

Can low water pressure damage my home?

Low pressure itself is not dangerous, but the cause can be. A hidden leak can lead to water damage.

The Bottom Line

Low water pressure in your house has a cause, and most causes are easy to find. Test with a gauge. Check your valves and aerators. Look for leaks. If the problem stays, call a licensed plumber. We Clean Out Your Pipes Not Your Pocketbook, and we do the job right the first time.
